FURIOUS STAKES

Sydney is host to two very exciting racing carnivals that take place in autumn and spring each year. The autumn carnival sees the majority of the city’s best group races, however there is still some excellent race days throughout autumn as well to keep the racing enthusiasts entertained. One of the meetings is the Chelmsford Stakes Day at the Royal Randwick racecourse. There are a number of great races at this event including the Gr.2 Chelmsford and Furious Stakes. These are the highlights of the day, followed by the Gr.3 Tramway Quality Handicap and the Listed Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap; so it is a full and amusing day for spectators and punters alike!

The Furious Stakes is a 1400m race for three-year-old fillies at set weights worth $150 000. In the lead up to the race, entries may have run in the Listed Sheraco Stakes (1100m) the week before at Rosehill, or come via the Gr.3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200) at Warwick Farm a fortnight before, which is also a race for three-year-old fillies at set weights but plus penalties. These are good indicators for the Furious Stakes and punters should keep an eye on the winners and placegetters when placing their bets. In recent years the Silver Shadow Stakes has proved an excellent guide to the Furious Stakes, with fillies such as Samantha Miss (2008), Mnemosyne (2005) and Victory Vein (2002) winning both races in the same season. The Silver Shadow – Furious Stakes also makes for an interesting betting double at the carnival, one well worth looking at the odds for!

Also look at the Silver Shadow Stakes for your Place bets in the Furious, as many fillies have placed in the top three in both races over the years. Love And Kisses finished 3rd in the Silver Shadow before rising to 2nd in the Furious in 2003. Wager is another example, she was runner-up in both events in 2004, as was Hosannah in 2001. Other fillies to follow this trend include Our Sweet Moss who won the 2004 Silver Shadow and followed it up with a 3rd in the Furious; and Unworldly finished 3rd in the Silver and then improved form to take victory in the Furious in 2000.

As you can see, a few strong fillies tend to dominate these carnival races and if you can spot who they are you will see more than a few winning wagers!

The Furious Stakes is good lead-up race for fillies going on to the Gr. 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill a month later. This race double is another favourite with the punters that has seen some excellent paying dividends in recent years. Numerous winners of the Furious have continued their form to take out the Tea Rose Stakes including Samantha Miss (2008), Mnemosyne (2005) and Victory Vein (2002).

Runners gain valuable racing experience in these two events, and punters get the opportunity to look out for the dominating fillies in the carnival, before the Gr.1 Flight Stakes at Randwick on Epson Handicap day is contested. The $300 000 Flight Stakes is the premier fillies’ event in the spring, and those entries who can step up to the longer distance of 1600m will see success. If you want to up the ante and try your hand at a really great wager that sees some of the biggest returns when successful, then the Furious Stakes – Tea Rose Stakes – Flight Stakes treble is for you! And there are plenty of fillies who have won all three in the same year including Samantha Miss (2008), Mnemosyne (2005), Prisoner Of Love (2004), Shamekha (2003), and Victory Vein (2002). So give this treble wager a go, fillies have won all three before so make sure you have a wager on when it happens again!

There are only two elite gallopers who have managed to win the Princess Series of races, which includes all four Sydney spring filly events, The Silver Shadow, Furious Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes and they are Samantha Miss (2008) and Angst (1993).

Conducted by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC), the Furious Stakes was first run in 1982 as a Listed race. It became a Group 3 race in 1995 before finally reaching Group 2 status in 2005. Today all good bookmakers offer a range of odds and betting options for the Furious Stakes and if lively betting action is what you after then make sure you place your wager on this fine filly race!
