A talented field of just nine three-year-old fillies have been nominated for this weekend’s Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick, highlighted by several notable performers over the 2014 Autumn Carnival.
Without doubt the standout performer over major two-year-old events this year, trainer John O’Shea has nominated Earthquake for her racing return in the 2014 Furious Stakes.
Stamping her claims as one to watch when charging home to win the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) on debut in November, Earthquake returned to racing in exceptional form this year; winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) first-up before overcoming a wide and awkward barrier to win the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) by close to two lengths on February 22nd.
Continuing her perfect career start through the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Exceed And Excel filly was unable to completely overcome a rain-soaked Rosehill track in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), and while still impressive, suffered her first defeat when finishing second to Mossfun.
Godolphin is poised to launch a two-pronged attack on the 2014 Furious Stakes, having also nominated exciting filly Memorial.
Rising to prominence on the back of four starts through autumn, Memorial was particularly impressive when finishing a credible fifth in the Golden Slipper on April 5th.
Jumping only fairly in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 23rd, the Street Cry filly was forced to settle off the pace however displayed a keen turn of foot to finish second to Bring Me The Maid.
The only other runner to have so-far secured a race win at the highest level of Australian racing nominated for the 2014 Furious Stakes, trainer Gerald Ryan revealed early this week he is thrilled with the condition of Peggy Jean and is confident of a polished first-up performance.
Finishing second to Nayeli in a minor race over 1000m on debut, Peggy Jean secured a maiden victory in the Inglis Classic (1200m) less-than two weeks later and continued to build in form and class on her way to second in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) before breaking through for an impressive victory in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12th.
Returning to the paddock after a luckless run for fifth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 26th, Peggy Jean will be a particularly large threat in the Furious Stakes if allocated a favourable barrier.
Carrying winning form into the 2014 Furious Stakes having taken out the Ranvet Handicap (1100m) with ease on August 20th, trainers Bart and James Cummings are confident of another strong performance from Sultry Feeling this weekend.
Less-than convincing when sixth in the Big Sports Breakfast Plate (1100m) on debut in February, Sultry Feeling broke through for a maiden race win at b on March 18th before finishing third in the Magic Night Stakes on less-than two weeks later.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Furious Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
