A talented field of just seven three-year-old fillies have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick, highlight by the first meeting of Group 1 champions Earthquake and Peggy Jean.
Stamping her claims as a serious racing contender from her very first appearance on course when winning the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1200m) in November, Earthquake returned to the track this year in exceptional form; comfortably winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) first-up on February 8th before overcoming a wide and awkward barrier to take out the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) with ease on February 22nd.
Winning the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd before suffering her first defeat when second to Mossfun in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) most recently, Godolphin have confirmed the Exceed And Excel filly for a racing return this weekend, underlining her need for competitive form ahead of the season’s major Group 1 races for three-year-olds.
Allocated the ideal barrier 3, jockey Kerrin McEvoy has been confirmed to retain the ride on Earthquake in the Furious Stakes.
Also quickly building to the task over her maiden racing preparation, Peggy Jean finished second amongst classy company in a minor over 1200m on debut, breaking through for a maiden race win when beating an equally talented field to the line in the Inglis Classic (1200m) less than two weeks later on January 18th.
Unlucky to be blocked for a run and third in a minor over 1200m at Rosehill on February 1st, the Myboycharlie filly ran on to finish second to subsequent Golden Slipper third Bring Me The Maid in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) before completing a near-perfect run to win the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) Day 1 of The Championships.
Returning to the paddock after placing fifth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 26th, trainer Gerald Ryan has revealed his is delighted with the form of Peggy Jean ahead of her Furious Stakes resumption, and is expecting a strong performance from the central barrier 4.
Likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 5 in the Furious Stakes, Alpha Miss will be aiming to build off a strong run for fourth in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 23rd.
Claiming three wins and one minor places from seven competitive starts to date, Alpha Miss won each of her first two competitive starts, including the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) in October.
Returning for fourth in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) in February, the Lucky Owners filly returned to the winner’s circle in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) before arguably securing her most impressive result to date when third in the Reisling Stakes.
Confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Jason Collet, Alpha Miss is a great chance of figuring in contention in the Furious Stakes.
Offering Godolphin a second competitive chance in the 2014 Furious Stakes, Memorial has returned to racing in great form this time in; displaying a keen turn of foot to overcome an early check and finish second in the Silver Shadow Stakes first-up.
Also taking out her first two race starts, the Street Cry filly finished second to Alpha Miss in the Lonhro Plate, also finishing a credible fifth in the Golden Slipper most notably in four autumn starts.
Allocated the ideal barrier 2, Memorial will be joined by Sultry Feeling (barrier 6), Winx (barrier 7) and Sailing Past (barrier 1) in the 2014 Furious Stakes.
