Winx Scores Upset Victory in 2014 Furious Stakes

September 6th, 2014

Talented filly Winx has produced the day’s big upset at Royal Randwick this afternoon, displaying a keen turn of foot to win the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) ahead of smart three-year-old Alpha Miss; resounding pre-post favourite Earthquake fading late to finish third.

Jumping from the gates well, the Street Cry filly settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Earthquake and Sultry Feeling, who set a noticeably quick tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend.

Finding the final straight slightly wide, Winx comfortably spooled up and charged towards the leaders, pulling more than two lengths clear upon finding the line.

Speaking on behalf of trainer Chris Waller who has lost his voice, stable representative Liam Prior said the team was understandably thrilled with Winx’s performance in the 2014 Furious Stakes, and confirmed she will progress to the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) before the major target of the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on October 4th.

“That was pretty special. Come the top of the straight he was starting to niggle at her and once she hit the furlong she really let down strong and that was a very dominant win,” Prior said.

“The boss thought that if she ran third or fourth today it would be a pass mark, but on the back of that going to the 1400m in two weeks she’s certainly on song for a very big preparation.

“To win like the way she did, I think the owners are going to have a lot of fun.”

Jockey Hugh Bowman delivered a typically strong ride on Winx in the 2014 Furious Stakes, and was delighted with the all-round performance produced by the classy three-year-old to win.

“I’ve had nothing to do with her, so I came here with an open mind,” Bowman said immediately after dismounting.

“What I liked about her was the way she got out of the barriers and put herself in the race.

“She did that and then travelled beautifully throughout; obviously there was very well-performed horses around me and I never felt like I had the race in the keeping.

“When I asked her to stretch at the 200m mark she showed she’s certainly got a bright future.”

Continuing a perfect run of form through the Group 2 Furious Stakes, Winx has secured three race wins from as many starts, delivering her connections more than $150,000 in prize money.
